The short answer
If your hot air balloon flight in Marrakech is cancelled, you lose nothing but a morning's sleep. With Marrakech by Balloon, a weather cancellation means one of two things: we rebook you on another morning during your stay, or, if no other date works, we give you a full refund with no charges. The decision is made by the pilot for one reason only, which is safety, and most cancellations are single-day events. The morning after a grounded flight is often calm and clear.
That is the summary. The rest of this guide explains who makes the call and why, how wind affects a balloon, when you will hear about a cancellation, and what you can do before and after booking to give yourself the best possible chance of flying.
1. Who decides whether the balloons fly?
The decision belongs to the pilot in command. Not the sales team, not the booking platform, and not the passengers. Marrakech by Balloon is authorised by Morocco's civil aviation authority (DAC), our pilots hold European balloon licences, and the go or no-go call on any given morning rests with the pilot who will be flying the balloon.
Our pilots cancel a flight when any of the following applies:
| Condition | Why it grounds the flight |
|---|---|
| Wind above 15 km/h | Inflation, take-off and landing become unsafe |
| Rain | Wet envelopes and poor visibility; unstable air often comes with it |
| Fog | The pilot must be able to see the ground, obstacles and landing fields |
| Storms | Gusts and unpredictable air can extend far beyond the storm itself |
| Doubtful weather | If the pilot is not confident, the balloon stays on the ground |
That last line matters more than it looks. A forecast is a probability, not a promise, and a pilot who is unsure is a pilot who should not take off. We would rather disappoint you for one morning than take a risk with your safety. It is also why we have completed more than 5,000 flights with no incidents.
Weather is not the only safety layer. Each of our balloons passes a Navigability Certificate inspection every six months, and before every take-off the crew checks the envelope, basket and burners. If anything is not right, the flight waits until it is.
A cancellation is therefore not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is a sign that the system is working. Be wary of any operator, in Marrakech or anywhere else, that seems reluctant to cancel when conditions are marginal.
2. Why does wind matter so much to a hot air balloon?
This is the question we hear most often, usually on a morning when the air in the city centre feels perfectly still. Can hot air balloons fly in wind? Only in light wind, and the reasons come down to basic physics.
A balloon has no engine and no rudder. It travels at the speed and in the direction of the air around it. The pilot steers by climbing and descending to find layers of air moving in slightly different directions, but cannot fly against the wind or slow down relative to it. Whatever speed the wind is blowing at ground level is roughly the speed the basket will be moving when it lands.
Landing is the critical moment. In calm air, a balloon settles gently onto a field and stops. In stronger wind, the basket touches down while still moving across the ground, can tip onto its side and may be dragged before the envelope deflates. That is uncomfortable at best and dangerous at worst, which is why the limit is set by what makes for a safe landing, not by what feels pleasant in the air.
Inflation needs calm conditions too. Before take-off, the envelope is laid out on the ground, filled with cold air by a fan and then heated by the burners. A large envelope catches wind like a sail, and a gusty breeze makes it difficult for the crew to control on the ground.
Thermals arrive with the sun. Once the sun starts heating the ground, warm air rises in columns called thermals, creating bumpy, unpredictable conditions. This is why every flight takes off at sunrise: the air is at its coolest and most settled before the day warms up. It is also why there is no option to "wait a couple of hours and go later". If the dawn window is lost, the morning is lost.
A final point that surprises many guests: wind at ground level in the medina tells you very little. What counts is the wind at the launch field and at the altitudes the balloon will fly through, which the pilot assesses from forecasts and conditions on site.
3. When are cancellations announced?
We know how much an early alarm costs on holiday, so we try to spare you a wasted one. When the forecast clearly rules out flying, we contact you as early as possible, often the evening before your flight, by phone or WhatsApp. The same evening message is also when you normally receive your exact pickup time on a flying day.
Sometimes, though, the forecast is borderline. In that case the pilot needs to see the actual conditions at first light, and the decision may be taken at the launch field at dawn. This is frustrating when it happens, but it exists for your benefit: cancelling every borderline morning the night before would ground many flights that turn out to be perfectly safe.
If you are cancelled at the launch site, our team will talk you through rebooking there and then, and the return transfer to your hotel or riad is part of your booking whichever way the morning goes.
To make sure you hear from us quickly:
- Give us a mobile number that works in Morocco and has WhatsApp.
- Keep your phone on and audible the evening before your flight.
- Tell your riad or hotel reception about your pickup, so they know to expect the driver.
4. Rebooking or refund: what are your options?
Our policy is deliberately simple. If we cancel your flight because of the weather:
- We offer to rebook you on another morning during your stay, at no extra cost.
- If you cannot rebook, because you are leaving or the alternative dates do not suit you, you receive a full refund. There are no charges and no deductions.
This applies to all three of our flights: the shared Classic hot air balloon ride, the private hot air balloon flight and the VIP balloon flight with breakfast served in the basket. Rebooking is usually the better outcome for you, because the experience is what you came for, and a refund cannot give you the sunrise over the Palmeraie with the High Atlas on the horizon.
A note on deposits: when you book with us you pay a deposit of €50 (500 MAD) per person, with the balance due before the flight. If the weather cancels your flight and you take the refund, the deposit comes back to you along with anything else you have paid.
Weather cancellation vs. cancelling yourself
Be clear about which situation you are in. Everything above applies when we cancel because conditions are unsafe. If you decide to cancel or change your own plans, contact us as early as you can and we will explain what applies to your booking. Weather is our responsibility to judge; you are never penalised for a decision the pilot made.
5. How can you maximise your chance of flying?
You cannot control the weather, but you can control how much room you leave for it. These are the habits that make the biggest difference.
Book for early in your trip. Fly on your first or second full morning in Marrakech. If that morning is grounded, you still have several chances to rebook. If you schedule the flight for your final morning, a cancellation leaves a refund as your only option.
Keep a spare morning free. Avoid filling every early start with other excursions. A morning with a flexible plan, such as a slow breakfast in the riad or a late visit to the souks, can easily become your backup flight day. Our Marrakech itinerary with a balloon ride shows how to build that slack into a short stay.
Avoid a late night before. The Classic flight pickup is around 5:00, a little earlier in summer and later in winter. A late dinner the night before will not ground the balloon, but it will make the morning harder work.
Think about the season. We fly all year round. October to April is generally the best period, with clear air and snow on the Atlas peaks, and summer flights still go ahead at sunrise when the air is cool. For a season-by-season breakdown, read our guide to the best time for a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech.
6. Booking platforms vs. booking direct: does it change anything?
Many travellers find Marrakech balloon rides on GetYourGuide, Viator or Civitatis. These platforms are useful for comparison, but when it comes to cancellations there are differences worth knowing.
| Booking direct with us | Booking through a platform | |
|---|---|---|
| Who contacts you about a cancellation | Us, directly, by phone or WhatsApp | The operator or the platform, depending on the listing |
| Rescheduling | Priority on weather rescheduling | Depends on the operator behind the listing and its availability |
| Refund route | Directly from us, full refund if you cannot rebook | Through the platform, under the listing's own terms |
| Price | Typically 15–20% cheaper (no middleman commission) | Includes the platform's commission |
The key line is rescheduling. After a grounded morning, many passengers want the next available morning at the same time. Guests who booked with us directly get priority on weather rescheduling, and they deal with the same team that is making the flying decision, with no intermediary in between.
If you do book through a platform, read the listing's cancellation terms before paying and keep the operator's direct contact details. Our guide to choosing the best hot air balloon company in Marrakech covers what else to check, and the price guide explains how headline platform prices compare with what is actually included.
7. What should you do the moment your flight is cancelled?
The first reaction is usually disappointment, especially if you have already set an alarm for 4:30. Here is how to turn it into a minor hiccup.
- Reply quickly. Answer our message or call as soon as you can. The sooner you confirm a new date, the more choice of mornings you have.
- Have your dates ready. Know which mornings you are still in Marrakech and which ones are free. Mention any fixed commitments, such as a desert trip or an early flight home.
- Choose rebooking if you can. A new date keeps the experience in your trip. If your remaining mornings are full, ask whether another excursion can move instead.
- Ask for the refund if you cannot rebook. If no date works, tell us and we will refund you in full.
- Keep everything in writing. Your WhatsApp thread with us is a convenient record of the new date or the refund agreed.
- Make the most of the morning. If you were cancelled the night before, enjoy a lie-in. If you were already up, our guide to sunrise activities in Marrakech has ideas for an early start that does not involve a balloon.
What a cancellation does not mean
It does not mean the operator is unreliable, that Marrakech is a bad place to fly, or that your trip is ruined. Marrakech has clear, settled mornings for much of the year, and grounded mornings are the exception. When they happen, they are usually isolated: a windy front passes, and the next day the balloons are back over the Palmeraie.
What it does mean is that the pilot looked at the conditions and decided they were not good enough for you. That is exactly the judgement you are paying for. Quick checklist
- Book your balloon flight for your first or second morning in Marrakech.
- Keep at least one spare morning free as a backup.
- Give us a Moroccan or international mobile number with WhatsApp.
- Watch your phone the evening before: that is when cancellations are most often announced and pickup times confirmed.
- Remember the limits: wind above 15 km/h, rain, fog, storms or doubtful weather mean no flight.
- If you are cancelled, reply quickly and choose a new date while there are mornings left.
- If no new date works, ask for your full refund. There are no charges for a weather cancellation.
- Book direct for priority on weather rescheduling.

Frequently asked questions
Why are hot air balloon rides cancelled in Marrakech?
Almost always because of the weather. Our pilots do not fly in wind above 15 km/h, rain, fog, storms or any doubtful conditions, and the pilot in command makes the final decision on safety grounds alone.
Do I get a refund if my balloon flight is cancelled due to weather?
Yes. If we cancel for weather, we first offer to rebook you on another morning during your stay. If none of the alternative dates work for you, you receive a full refund with no charges.
Can hot air balloons fly in wind?
Only in light wind. A balloon has no engine or rudder and moves at the speed of the air around it, so strong wind makes inflation, take-off and especially landing unsafe. Our limit is 15 km/h.
When will I know if my balloon flight is cancelled?
We contact you as early as possible, often the evening before the flight. Occasionally conditions change overnight and the pilot makes the call at the launch field at dawn.
How often do hot air balloon flights get cancelled in Marrakech?
On a minority of mornings. Marrakech is a reliable place to fly, and most cancellations are single-day events, so the following morning is often perfectly flyable.
Should I book my balloon ride at the start of my trip?
Yes. Flying on your first or second morning leaves spare mornings for a rebooking if the weather intervenes. Booking for your last morning means a cancellation can only end in a refund.
