Best Hot Air Balloon Company in Marrakech: How to Choose

Why choosing a balloon company in Marrakech is harder than it looks

Search for a hot air balloon in Marrakech and you will find dozens of listings that look almost identical: a sunrise photo, the Atlas Mountains on the horizon, "breakfast included" and a price that can range from under $30 on a booking platform to around €150–€200 for a shared flight, and more for a private one, on an operator's own website. Behind those listings sits a small number of companies that actually own balloons and employ pilots, and a much larger number of agencies, hotels and platforms that resell their seats.

Established operators in the area include Ciel d'Afrique (flying since 1990), Marrakech by Air, Atlas Montgolfière, Sky Experience Marrakech, Marrakech Dream Ballooning, Magic Balloons and ourselves, Marrakech by Balloon. This guide is not a ranking, and we will not tell you which of them is "the best hot air balloon company in Marrakech". The right choice depends on what matters to you: safety record, basket size, budget, the views you want or a special occasion.

What we can do is give you the questions that separate a good operator from a risky one, explain what a good answer looks like, and show how we answer each of them ourselves, so you can hold every company, including us, to the same standard.

1. Is the company authorised by Morocco's civil aviation authority?

This is the first question to ask, and the one you should never skip. A hot air balloon is an aircraft, and Morocco's civil aviation authority, the DAC (Direction de l'Aviation Civile), oversees civil aviation. A professional operator should be able to confirm it holds DAC authorisation. A professional company will tell you plainly that it holds this authorisation, and should not be vague or evasive when asked.

Why it matters: a cheap seat sold by an agency is only as good as the company that actually flies the balloon, so if you book through a third party, ask for the name of the operator and check that operator, not the reseller.

How we meet it: Marrakech by Balloon is authorised by the DAC, Morocco's civil aviation authority.

2. Who is flying the balloon, and are they licensed?

The pilot in command makes every decision that matters on the morning: whether to fly, how high to go and where to land. A balloon pilot's licence shows they have been trained and tested to do that. Ask which licence the pilots hold, and do not be shy about it — a professional operator expects the question.

Pilot experience also shows up in the flight itself. A confident pilot can hold the balloon low over the palm groves, climb for the wide Atlas view, and pick a gentle landing field. That is hard to judge from a listing, but it often comes through in reviews (see question 11).

How we meet it: our pilots hold European balloon licences, and the final go/no-go decision always rests with the pilot in command.

3. How often are the balloons inspected?

A hot air balloon is three main parts: the envelope (the fabric), the basket and the burners. All three wear with use and need regular, documented inspection. Two levels of checking matter:

Ask the company how often each balloon is inspected and what the crew checks on the morning. A clear, specific answer is a good sign; "don't worry, it's all fine" is not.

How we meet it: each of our balloons passes a Navigability Certificate inspection every six months, and the crew checks the envelope, basket and burners before every take-off. We have operated more than 5,000 flights with no incidents.

4. Is the flight properly insured?

Insurance is easy to overlook because you hope you will never need it. There are two separate things to understand:

Ask the operator to confirm that third-party liability insurance is included, and check that your own policy covers adventure activities such as ballooning.

How we meet it: full third-party liability insurance is included on every flight. Personal travel insurance is not included, so please arrange your own.

5. How big is the basket, and how many people share it?

Basket size is one of the biggest differences between offers, and it is often left out of the headline. In a shared basket you stand in a compartment with other passengers, and the more people on board, the more you are sharing the views and the space at the edge. It is worth asking how many passengers fly in the basket, and whether the compartments are divided.

If you want space for photos, are celebrating a proposal or anniversary, or simply prefer not to share, a private balloon removes the question altogether.

How we meet it: our shared Classic hot air balloon ride flies 16–24 passengers in a shared basket. The private hot air balloon flight gives your group the whole balloon (up to 28 people), and the VIP flight adds breakfast served in the basket mid-flight and a personal concierge.

6. Where does the balloon take off, and what will you see?

Not every Marrakech balloon flies over the same landscape. Operators may launch from different areas around the city — the Palmeraie north of Marrakech is the best known, and some companies may fly elsewhere, for example towards Agafay or Lalla Takerkoust. Each area offers a different view, so ask the company exactly where it launches and what you can expect to see, rather than relying on a generic photo.

Also ask how far the launch site is from your hotel, because that drives the pickup time.

How we meet it: we always launch from the Palmeraie, the palm-grove reserve 20–30 minutes north of central Marrakech. The landscape is flat farmland and palm groves, with the eastern horizon towards the Jbilet hills and, to the south, the snow-capped High Atlas. On clear days you can see Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak. If you are deciding when to go for the clearest mountain views, read our guide to the best time for a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech.

7. How long is the flight actually in the air?

This is where listings can be most misleading. "4-hour experience" usually describes the whole morning — pickup, drive, inflation, flight, breakfast and return — not the time spent flying. Two offers with the same total duration can have very different flight times.

Ask the company one simple question: how many minutes is the balloon in the air?

How we meet it: a Classic morning with us looks like this:

Time What happens
5:00 Pickup from your hotel or riad
5:30 4x4 ride through the Palmeraie
6:00 Safety briefing while the balloon inflates
6:30 Sunrise lift-off — 45 to 60 minutes in the air
7:30 Traditional Moroccan breakfast
8:30 Drive back
~9:00 Drop-off at your hotel

The total is around four hours, of which 45–60 minutes is flight. Pickup is a little earlier in summer and later in winter, and we send the exact time the evening before.

8. Are breakfast and transfers included?

Most Marrakech balloon offers mention breakfast and transfers, but the details vary. Check:

These extras are part of what you are paying for, so compare them line by line rather than assuming every "breakfast included" means the same thing.

How we meet it: every flight includes return hotel or riad transfers in central Marrakech, the 4x4 ride to the launch field, a personalised flight certificate and a traditional Moroccan breakfast after landing — msemen, baghrir, local honey, amlou, cheese, olives, fresh orange juice and mint tea. On the VIP flight breakfast is served in the basket during the flight.

9. Is the price transparent?

Prices for a balloon ride in Marrakech vary widely. Platform listings advertise rides "from $29–35", while operators' own sites tend to quote far more for a standard or private flight. A very low headline price is not automatically a red flag, but it should make you ask what is and is not included, how many people share the basket, and which company will actually fly you. We explain the gap in detail in why balloon rides look so cheap on Viator.

Questions to ask about price:

How we meet it: our prices are per person and shown on the site.

Flight Price from Basket
Classic (shared) 1,700 Dhs (~€170 / ~$185) Shared, 16–24 passengers
Private 5,000 Dhs (~€500 / ~$540) Your group only, up to 28
VIP 6,000 Dhs (~€600 / ~$650) Private, breakfast in the basket, concierge

Not included: personal travel insurance, crew gratuities, alcohol or champagne (on request) and custom decorations or photography (on request). We take a deposit of €50 (500 MAD) per person, with the balance paid before the flight by bank transfer or in cash at the launch site. For a full breakdown, see our hot air balloon Marrakech price guide.

10. What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Balloons only fly in calm conditions, so every operator cancels some mornings. What matters is how the company decides and what happens to your money:

Be cautious of any operator that seems keen to fly whatever the conditions, or that only offers a voucher if the weather stops the flight.

How we meet it: the pilot cancels if the wind is above 15 km/h, or if there is rain, fog, storms or doubtful weather. We contact you as early as possible, often the evening before, to rebook another morning during your stay. If you cannot rebook, you receive a full refund with no charges. Read more in what happens if your balloon flight is cancelled.

11. How should you read hot air balloon Marrakech reviews?

Reviews are useful, but only if you read them carefully. A few tips:

Recommendations in travel forums and Facebook groups can be helpful too, but treat any single opinion as one data point, not a verdict.

12. Should you book direct or through a booking platform?

Platforms such as GetYourGuide, Viator and Civitatis are convenient, especially if you already use them for other activities. The trade-off is that the platform takes a commission, which is built into the price, and that you may not know in advance which operator will fly you. When the weather changes, your message also has to pass through an extra layer before it reaches the people running the flight.

Booking directly with the operator usually means a lower price, a clear answer about who is flying and a direct line to the team on the morning.

How we meet it: booking direct with us is typically 15–20% cheaper than GetYourGuide, Viator or Civitatis, because there is no middleman commission. Direct bookings also get priority when a flight has to be rescheduled for weather, and direct WhatsApp support. You can book through the online form, by phone or on WhatsApp (+212 664-577633).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hot air balloon company in Marrakech?

There is no single best operator for every traveller. The best hot air balloon company for you is one that is authorised by Morocco's civil aviation authority (DAC), employs licensed pilots and inspected balloons, tells you the real flight time and basket size, and has a clear, written cancellation and refund policy.

Is hot air ballooning in Marrakech safe?

Ballooning is safe when the operator is authorised, the pilots are licensed, the equipment is inspected and the pilot cancels in doubtful weather. Ask any company how it handles each of these points before you pay.

Is it cheaper to book a balloon ride directly or through Viator or GetYourGuide?

Booking directly with the operator is usually cheaper because no platform commission is added. With Marrakech by Balloon, booking direct is typically 15–20% cheaper than GetYourGuide, Viator or Civitatis, and you get direct WhatsApp support and priority when a flight has to be rescheduled.

How long is a hot air balloon flight in Marrakech actually in the air?

The whole morning takes around four hours, but the flight itself is shorter. Marrakech by Balloon flights last 45–60 minutes in the air; always check the flight time, not just the total excursion time.

Is a private or shared balloon better in Marrakech?

A shared basket is the most affordable way to fly, while a private balloon gives your group the whole basket and more freedom for photos or celebrations. Our Classic shared flight carries 16–24 passengers; the Private flight is for your group only, up to 28 people.

What happens if my balloon flight is cancelled?

A reputable company grounds the balloon in strong wind, rain, fog or storms and offers you another morning or a refund. With us, if you cannot rebook during your stay, you get a full refund with no charges.
