Cheap Hot Air Balloon Marrakech: Why $29 on Viator?

The short answer

Search for a cheap hot air balloon in Marrakech and the booking platforms will show you numbers that look almost too good to be true. Viator's Marrakech balloon page currently headlines "prices from US$29", and individual listings show "from £22" or "from £26". Then you visit an operator's own website and see something closer to €165–€170 for a shared sunrise flight.

Both numbers are real. They are just not measuring the same thing. The headline figure is a "from" price: the lowest amount a listing can display. The amount most adults actually pay for a shared flight with transfers and breakfast sits much higher. Viator's own page says as much further down, noting that Marrakech balloon rides "start at around US$145".

This guide explains where the gap comes from, what the cheapest flights tend to leave out, how platform commission affects the price you pay, and the questions to ask before you hand over your card. We are a hot air balloon operator in Marrakech, so we have an obvious interest here. We have tried to be fair: the platforms do some things very well, and we say so below.

1. What does a "from" price actually mean?

A "from" price is a marketing floor, not a quote. On the large booking platforms, the figure on the listing card is the lowest price the product can be sold for under some combination of conditions. Depending on the listing, that floor can reflect:

The only number that matters is the total you see after you select your date, your number of adults and children, and any options. On the listings we checked, the price is displayed per person "from" a figure, and the final amount is confirmed at checkout. Many platform listings also offer "Reserve now and pay later", which lets you hold a place without paying the full amount upfront. That is a useful feature, but it is not the same thing as the flight costing the reserved amount.

Practical tip: before you compare two listings, open both, enter the same date and the same party, and compare the checkout totals. Comparing card prices is comparing two different marketing floors.

2. How much does a hot air balloon in Marrakech really cost?

Once you strip out the headline figures, prices for a standard shared sunrise flight cluster in a fairly narrow band. Operators' own websites and travellers' reports put a shared flight with transfers and breakfast at roughly 1,400–1,800 Dhs per person, and private balloons in the hundreds of euros per person.

Here is what our own flights cost, as shown on this site:

Flight Price per person Basket What changes
Classic (shared) from 1,700 Dhs, was 2,100 (about €170 / $185) Shared, 16–24 passengers The standard sunrise flight
Private from 5,000 Dhs (about €500 / $540) Whole balloon for your group, up to 28 No strangers in the basket
VIP from 6,000 Dhs (about €600 / $650) Private balloon Breakfast served in the basket mid-flight, personal concierge

All three include return hotel or riad transfers from central Marrakech, the 4x4 ride to the launch field, a 45–60 minute flight, a traditional Moroccan breakfast, a personalised flight certificate and full third-party liability insurance.

3. Why can platforms show such low prices?

There is nothing mysterious about it. Several ordinary factors stack up.

The "from" price is the cheapest possible configuration

As above, the card price is the lowest the product can be sold for. A listing with a child rate, a quiet date or a flight-only option may advertise that number, even if it isn't the fare most adults pay.

Promotions and strikethrough prices

Platform listings often show a "special offer" with a crossed-out higher price next to a lower one. Discounts can be real, but always check the discounted price against what is included.

Shared baskets are large

Shared balloons in Marrakech carry a lot of people. Our own Classic basket takes 16–24 passengers, so check each listing for the number it states. Large baskets are normal and not a problem in themselves: they are what makes a shared flight affordable. What you want is for the listing to tell you the number clearly.

Some extras are sold separately

Some products offer paid extras on the day, such as photos, drone video or an earlier "first flight" slot. None of this is wrong, but if you end up buying the extras, the cheap flight is no longer cheap.

4. What do cheaper flights tend to cut?

Not every low price means a worse morning. But when a shared flight costs well below the going rate, the saving has to come from somewhere. These are the places to look.

What to check Why it matters
Time in the air The whole morning lasts around four hours, but the flight itself is the point. Some listings quote a shorter flight time; ours are 45–60 minutes. Ask for the flight time, not the excursion time.
Transfers Is pickup from your hotel or riad door, from the nearest accessible point, or from a central meeting point? Is it included or extra?
Breakfast "Breakfast" can mean pastries and tea, or a full Moroccan spread. Ours is msemen, baghrir, local honey, amlou, cheese, olives, fresh orange juice and mint tea.
Flight certificate A small thing, but often listed as included and sometimes not.
Insurance Is passenger third-party liability insurance included in the price? It should be.
Launch site Flights launch from different areas around Marrakech, including the Palmeraie and the Agafay area. Each offers a different landscape; just make sure you know which one you are booking.
Weather policy If the pilot cancels, do you get a rebooking or a full refund, or only a voucher?

Our guide to choosing a balloon company in Marrakech goes through each of these points in more detail.

5. Is a cheap hot air balloon in Marrakech safe?

Price is not a safety signal in either direction. An expensive flight is not automatically safer, and a well-priced flight is not automatically unsafe. What matters is the operator behind the listing, and that is the same whether you book through a platform or directly.

These are the questions worth asking:

If a listing does not name the operator, ask. A platform is a shop window: the flight itself is always run by a local balloon company.

6. Book direct or through Viator and GetYourGuide?

This is the question most people are really asking. The honest answer is that both routes have advantages.

What the platforms do well

What booking direct does better

A practical approach many travellers use: read the platform reviews to shortlist an operator, then check that operator's own website for the direct price. If the operator is the same and the inclusions are the same, the direct price is usually the lower one.

7. What happens if a cheap flight is cancelled?

Ballooning depends on calm morning air, so some flights are cancelled for weather whatever you paid. What differs between bookings is how the cancellation is handled.

When we cancel for weather, we contact you as early as possible, often the evening before, and rebook you during your stay. If you cannot rebook, you get a full refund with no charges. If you book through a platform, check both the platform's policy and the operator's, because you are dealing with two companies. Our article on what happens if your balloon flight is cancelled covers this in detail, and flying early in your trip leaves room for a second attempt.

8. Questions to ask before booking a cheap balloon

Copy these into a message to the operator or check them against the listing. A reputable company will answer all of them without hesitation.

  1. What is the total price for my party on my date, including any fees?
  2. Who is the operator, and is it authorised by the DAC?
  3. How long is the flight itself, not the whole excursion?
  4. How many passengers are in the basket?
  5. Is hotel or riad pickup included, and from where exactly?
  6. What does the breakfast consist of, and is it before or after the flight?
  7. Are the flight certificate and liability insurance included?
  8. Where is the launch site?
  9. What extras will I be offered on the day, and what do they cost?
  10. If the flight is cancelled for weather, do I get a rebooking or a full refund?

Frequently asked questions

Why are some hot air balloon rides in Marrakech so cheap on Viator?

The headline figure is a 'from' price: the lowest amount the listing can show, not necessarily what an adult pays on your date. Check the total after you select a date and the number of travellers, and compare what is included before comparing prices.

Is a cheap hot air balloon ride in Marrakech safe?

Price alone does not tell you whether a flight is safe. Ask whether the operator is authorised by Morocco's civil aviation authority (DAC), how often its balloons are inspected, what its wind limit is and whether passenger liability insurance is included.

Is it cheaper to book a hot air balloon directly or through Viator or GetYourGuide?

For the same operator and the same flight, booking direct is usually cheaper because no platform commission is added. At Marrakech by Balloon, booking direct is typically 15–20% cheaper than booking the same flight through GetYourGuide, Viator or Civitatis.

How much does a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech really cost?

A shared sunrise flight with transfers and breakfast generally costs around 1,400–1,800 Dhs per person when booked with an operator. Our Classic shared flight is from 1,700 Dhs (about €170 / $185), and private balloons start at 5,000 Dhs per person.

Is a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech worth it?

For most visitors, yes. A 45–60 minute sunrise flight over the Palmeraie with views to the snow-capped High Atlas is one of the most memorable mornings you can have in Marrakech, provided you book a flight that includes everything you expect.

How long is the hot air balloon ride in Marrakech?

The whole morning takes about four hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. Time in the air varies by product, so check the flight duration in the listing; our flights last 45–60 minutes.
